Trying to conceive or want a better libido? Certain foods really do increase sensitivity, drive and stamina.
Fortunately, the super sex foods are also low carb foods. Here’s how and why to stock up on these foods that increase libido.
“Little Man’s not cooperating? Start eating watermelon! Ladies, lubricate the natural way with avocados.”
That’s just part of the surprising advice from doctors Anna Maria and Brian Clement. These libido experts are the co-authors of 7 Keys to Lifelong Sexual Vitality: The Hippocrates Institute Guide to Sex, Health, and Happiness.
Dill increases desire. Eating three to five ounces about an hour before sex stimulates hormones and therefore, your sex drive.
Acai fruit, Brazil nuts, broccoli, figs, Goji berries, kale and sprouts all increase egg production and libido.
Take Your “Sex Vitamin”
Sweet potatoes, raspberries, alfalfa sprouts, carrots and most nuts contain vitamin E, the so-called “sex vitamin.” ‘
Vitamin E is known as a sex vitamin because it increases the libido for both sexes, and heightens desire, sensitivity and longevity.
Enjoy any or all of these vitamin E foods two to three hours before sexual activity.
Stalk to Seduce
It’s stringy and tastes like crunchy water, but celery is the swizzle stick that can stir up your sex life.
Every stalk is packed with androstenone and androstenol, two pheromones that help your attraction the way trailer parks attract tornadoes.
“When you chew a stalk of celery, you release androstenone and androstenol odor molecules into your mouth. They travel up the back of your throat to your nose,” says Alan Hirsch, M.D., author of Scentsational Sex.
“Once there, the pheromones boost your arousal, turning you on and causing your body to send off scents and signals that make you more desirable to others.”
Try it next time you’re in the mood, grab a stalk and munch away.
“The pheromones take effect immediately, so you should notice your partner paying more attention to you right away,” says Dr. Hirsch.
Sizzling Sex Stamina
Sparks can dwindle. Need an easy way to reignite the relationship? Visit your favorite steak house for some sizzling, lean sirloin.
The protein in the meat will naturally boost levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, two chemicals in the brain that heighten arousal during sex.
Steak also boosts libido by reducing your body’s production of prolactin, a hormone that interferes with arousal.
Best of all, eating red meat boosts testosterone and levels of a sex hormone binding globulin that increases blood flow to the penis and increases overall sexual stamina.
Black raspberries also increase your endurance. Eat 10 berries about two hours before sex.
Need heavy stimulation? Finish your evening with a few pieces of dark chocolate.
The cocoa in chocolate has methylxanthines, stimulants that increase your body’s sensitivity— ensuring that your skin feels even the slightest touch or movement against it.
Dark chocolate has another chemical that gives a slight natural high.
The euphoric feeling is similar to the sensations you experience when you first fall in love.
Nuts and Seeds
Nuts, seeds, grains and beans also heighten sexual pleasure because they contain essential fatty acids, which are vital for sexual sensitivity.
Avocados, artichokes, cantaloupe, and spinach also heighten sensitivity during sex because they contain niacin, also known as vitamin B3.
Niacin allows blood flow to all organ and glands. It increases cellular activity and increases sensitivity during the sexual experience.
Strong Erection Protection
Forget those little blue pills.
“Blueberries are one of the best foods for older men with erectile problems,” says Mary Ellen Camire, Ph.D. and Professor of food science at the University of Maine.
“Blueberries are loaded with soluble fiber, which pushes excess cholesterol through your digestive system before it can be broken down, absorbed and deposited along the walls of your arteries,” she says. “They’re also packed with compounds that help relax your blood vessels, improving circulation.”
The benefit of lower cholesterol and better blood flow? More blood to the penis and stronger erections as you grow older.
For maximum potency and performance, Camire recommends eating a serving of blueberries (fresh or blended into a drink) at least three or four times a week.
Increase Your Count
When your body’s low on vitamin A, sperm production goes down dramatically. It doesn’t sound sexy, but ounce for ounce the best source of fertility-boosting vitamin A is liver.
Studies show that men who get plenty of vitamin A each day have higher sperm counts and perform better sexually than men who don’t.
Zinc or Swim
According to research studies completed during the last 30 years, having a zinc deficiency causes hair loss, delayed sexual maturation, impotence and hypogonadism in men.
So, where’s the zinc?
Liver is also an excellent source of zinc.
Your body expels 5 milligrams of zinc (1/3 of your daily need) every time you ejaculate, so a single amorous weekend could leave your body’s zinc reserves running on empty.
Other sources for zinc
Oysters, salmon, pumpkin seeds, squash seeds, dark chocolate, garlic, sesame seeds, watermelon seeds, wheat germ, chickpeas, shrimp, crab, beef, lima beans, egg yolks, mushrooms, turkey, lobster, spinach, lamb and kidney beans.
Shape Up Your Swimmers
Cigarette smoke, air pollution, and other toxins in the air damage sperm, altering the DNA inside your cells.
Your best bet for fighting these pollutants? Brazil nuts.
Brazil nuts are a top source of selenium, a vitamin that helps keep sperm cells healthy and helps them swim faster.
When researchers in the United Kingdom had men with fertility problems increase their selenium intake, the men produced hardier, more viable sperm cells.
Keith Ayoob, a spokesman for the ADA (American Dietetic Association) says “Brazil nuts are a great source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects sperm cells against damage from free-radicals.”

Base: Start with a mix of low carb “super” greens such as mustard greens, spinach, baby kale or pea greens.
Toppings: Add chopped scallions, dried apricots (high carb, so use as a garnish only), avocado, zucchini, chopped broccoli, walnuts, chia sprouts or pumpkin seeds.
Dressing: Mix together 4 tbsp. lemon juice, olive oil and 1 garlic clove.
